What is Family Dentistry

Family dentistry is not, as many believe, just another term meaning pediatric dentistry. Instead, it refers to dentists who specialize in the treatment of every member of the family, at every stage of growth. These dentists are trained and experienced in the treatment of infants, pregnant women, nursing mothers, adolescents, and those advancing in age.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU VISIT

On your first visit, the dentist will perform a thorough examination and consultation if you or your family members have any issues. If you have children, the desist will typically take time to talk with them about oral hygiene, as well as any fears or concerns your child may have about seeing a dentist.
Typically, family dentistry offices have a bit more relaxed, family environment. Most provide special accommodations for children, such as toys, games, child-sized furniture, and kid's books. When children feel comfortable and welcome in the dentist's office, they tend to be less anxious regarding the work being done. Pleasant dental experiences early in a child's life can lead to a life-long habit of good oral hygiene. Children who have an unpleasant, or frightening dental experience early in life are more likely to avoid dental appointments as adults.

DENTAL PROCEDURES

Family dentistry encompasses most procedures you would ever need. Naturally, they will encourage you and your entire family to schedule regular appointments for routine checkups, and cleaning. The dentist will watch closely for any signs of cavities; often one on the most common problems for children. You or your child can have X-rays, if needed, right in the office. Routine procedures such as fillings, extractions, and root canals are performed daily, and many have emergency services as well.
Many of the more common cosmetic dentistry procedures can be done at a family dentistry office; often with a greater emphasis on safety, and a better understanding of children’s needs than you might find at a cosmetic specialist. Teeth whitening, which is one of the most popular procedures at nearly any dental clinic will nearly always be available. In many cases providing equal results and a much lower price. At most offices, any needed appliances such as dentures, partials or implants are available. Most often, you will find the dentist skilled and experienced with corrective dentistry procedures including braces for children and adults.

WHY CHOOSE FAMILY DENTISTRY?

While this is a specialized are of practice, there are many similarities to general dentistry. However, many parents prefer to see the same dentist, doctor, or other professional as their children when possible. Many believe they can gain more insight into quality of care as a patient than just an observer, as well as developing a better relationship with the dentist.
Many patients value the convenience of taking all family members to a single office. It is often possible to schedule appointments for several family members in one day, eliminating the inconvenience of separate trips to pediatric, general, and geriatric dental offices. Additionally, many parents do not like the fact that a child will ‘outgrow’ a pediatric dentist, and choose this option so their child will be able to establish a long-term relationship with a quality dentist.
Family dentistry is a good option for nearly anyone wishing to simplify their life with a single, compassionate, high quality dentist for the entire household.
